This is where all technology starts -
in Kindergarten, learning to read and write.

Literacy and Technology

Literacy is the basis of technology. While co-teaching a technolgy lesson yesterday, the reality of that fact hit home. If someone cannot read or write, how can they communicate through technology? All of the digital communication equipment in the world does our students no good if they have lack literacy skills. Despite videostreaming, mp3s, MPEG videos, and HTML, the web is still a text-based form of communication. Look at our blogs, IMs, e-mails, documents, and websites; practically everything we do with technology is dependant on our ability to read and write.

California School Districts with Web Servers

Here is a useful site if you are job hunting in education or know someone who is:

http://www.slocoe.org/resource/calpage1.htm

The site lists California school districts with web servers. The schools' home pages are hyperlinked to their listed names. With a single click, you are redirected to the schools' websites. You can prepare for interviews, see photos of the schools, read mission statements, and get a good overview of districts in a relatively short time.

Problems

This is my third attempt to post a blog today. Uploading a photograph via flickr did not seem to go through, and the blogger server had technical difficulties when I submitted my last post. As Brent observed last week, "Technology can come back and bite you!"

Motivation to Find A Permanent Teaching Position

This post is dedicated to my Dad, who has always encouraged me to work. I spent the day preparing to substitute teach in three local school districts. After reading this, you will understand why you never saw substitute teachers on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

180 teaching days X $85 dollars per day* X 1 school year = $15,300 dollars

*This equation does not take into account that 7-10 of these teaching days are minimum days, which pay only $43 dollars per day.

Kind of takes your breath away, doesn't it?

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

Initial BLOG

Here is where it all begins; this is my first time using a BLOG. I have been trying to post some photographs, and that has been a learning experience.

"A picture is worth a thousand words," as the saying goes.

I have a beautiful life, and hope that you can enjoy seeing glimpses of through photographs.

These are shots from Mary Buren Elementary in Guadalupe, CA. My second quarter student teaching assignment was with a bilingual kindergarten class. My master teacher and I are in the photograph with the blue sand toy.

The staff and children at Mary Buren are absolutely wonderful. There is a lot of comraderie and positive attitudes, as these photos show.
